Using free blogging sites online is one way to make your online business stand out. There are the usual suspects of these sites that you can use, such as WordPress.com and Blogger.com, but don’t forget that there are many others as well, such as:

  • LiveJournal.com
  • blogsome.com
  • blog.com
  • blogster.com
  • xanga.com
  • weebly.com
  • Thoughts.com
  • Vox.com
  • typepad.com
  • windowslive.com

Most of these free blogging sites will have a very simple process that you have to follow to get everything set up; and usually only takes a few minutes.

But once you have it, what then?

You set up your blog, you added content, you figured out all the bells and whistles you wanted, but you just aren’t getting the traffic you expected.

Aha, that’s where viral marketing comes into play. What we will do is take a look at some techniques you can use to make your blog stand out. It may require some adjustment on your part, but you’ll usually find the adjustments easy to make.

Tip #1: Add a TweetMeme and Digg Button to the Top of Your Page. Both buttons will allow readers instantly Tweet or Digg the blog post you made. But they must be highly visible to the blog reader; so make it easy for them and add these buttons at the top of every page.

Tip #2: Use BlogCarnival.com. Visit the site and perform a topic search for one of your keywords. Find a carnival that seems right for the very topic you’re discussing and submit it. The carnival owner will decide whether or not to include that blog post in their carnival. I know at first that a blog carnival might sound a bit confusing, so I suggest you read the FAQ on their site. I just know that this can be fantastic. Highway to get more traffic to your blog.

Tip #3: Paid Tweets. You can pay someone to tweet about your blog post on Retweet.it or TwitPub, both of which are very affordable. Or, you can make use of a new service called Fiverr, which is a place where anyone can do almost anything for $5, including tweeting their link to your Twitter list.

Tip #4: Paid slips. Yes, you can buy traffic on StumbleUpon. It’s also pretty cheap, starting at 0.05 per hit, but this price will vary depending on how popular your page is. Now, StumbleUpon uses nofollow links, which means you won’t get any links from Google, but it can get your page in front of a lot of people very quickly.

The bottom line is that once you have your blog and content ready to go, driving traffic to it is the next key thing to focus on. These tips will put you well on your way.
