Elinor Brent-Dyer’s Chalet School series seems to be one of the most popular school series. There were 62 books in total, which is why it is so difficult to collect the entire set. There were also additional books and newsletters. Recently, new authors have written “filler” books in which they feel there should be additional information not provided by the author herself. Some of the books are extremely rare and some paperbacks, even reprints, can sell for over £30, making some hardcover early editions extremely valuable.

If you have started a collection or would like to, I have some advice for you. First, decide if you want to collect paperbacks, hardcovers, or either, and if you want to get all the titles or just the actual series of books and not the newsletters, bonus books, and books by other authors. Once you’ve decided, you’ll need to put together a list of these titles. Most of the newer reprints have a full list of titles on the front, and you can search for them on various websites as well. I’ve included a list at the end of the article (it includes all the original books plus some extras. I know I’ve missed some of the extras).

Now you need to know where to start looking for these books. eBay is an obvious choice, but some of the rarer books are hard to find even on eBay and when they do appear, it’s easy to be outbid. However, it’s still worth searching for and posting on eBay’s “wish” pages. There are other websites that sell second-hand books, but they are usually more expensive. So I often look at secondhand bookstores, fairs, and charity book sales. Sometimes you can buy the titles a little cheaper, and you can also ask the distributors to find copies for you and reserve them for you. Girls Gone By publishes some of the out-of-print titles in full-length paperbacks and some new authors who have written “filler” books. These sell out very quickly, but you can usually find copies on eBay for a while. These are ideal if you’re looking to fill gaps in your collection and don’t mind books being a different size than the originals. Other filler title publishers include Bettany Press and Troubador Publishing.

If you want, for example, to read the entire series but also get a nice hardcover collection, I would recommend buying any title you see that you don’t own. It can take a long time to get all the hardcover books and you can always sell the paperback on eBay once you find a hardcover version. You can also do this with paperbacks if you want a particular cover style or want to replace some of your more worn copies with neater ones.
