Acne vulgaris is derived from a Greek word ‘akme’ which means ‘tip, edge’ in the sense of ‘rash’. It is a common human disease found on the skin and mainly affects the face and upper parts of the chest and back because these parts have a large population of sebaceous follicles. It occurs due to change in phyllosebaceous units, a change that requires androgen stimulation. Some of the lesions that occur may be inflammatory while others are not. Acne is common during puberty in both men and women due to the increase in the hormone androgen in adolescents. Varying in humans, the condition may disappear or continue into adulthood.

Severe cases of this condition can be described as ‘nodulocytic’ and the nodules were termed ‘cysts’, and it is a severe case of the condition that can appear anywhere sweat collects, including the buttocks, armpits and groin. , and affects the deeper skin. The condition has effects such as reduced self-esteem, depression, and in severe cases, suicide and general social insecurity.

The physical scars are known as ‘ice picks’, they cause indentations in the skin’s surface and are darker because the skin tries to heal itself, producing too much collagen in one spot. It develops as a result of the blockage of the follicles and also increases sebum production due to the expansion of the sebaceous glands which occurs with the increase in androgen forming a plug of keratin and sebum called ‘micromedo’. The micromedo may enlarge to form an open comedone known as a blackhead or closed milio. Both are caused by the blockage of the pores by sebum, the skin’s natural oil, and dead skin cells. Other causes of acne can be hormonal such as the menstrual cycle, other related hormones are testosterone and dihydrotestisterone.

It can occur in adult women due to conditions such as pregnancy, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and Cushigs syndrome, which are rare. It can occur at menopause because the body does not produce ‘ostradiol’, which is the body’s natural anti-acne. However, it may be genetic where it occurs and runs in the family with a history of the condition. The same has also been associated with psychological conditions such as stress that make it worse.

Diet can also be a big contributor to it, especially foods containing milk and chocolate. There are several methods of acne diagnosis, including: the Cooks grading scale, the Pills Burry scale, and the Leeds grading technique.

There are different treatment methods such as the use of benzol peroxide, antibiotics, retinoids, antiandrogens, hormonal treatment and alpha hydroxyl acid, among others. They have different effects including unblocking the pores and suppressing the androgen hormone. Procedures may also be performed on the affected person, such as “dermabrasion,” which is a cosmetic intended to remove damaged skin. Phototherapy is light exposure and is a short-term treatment in which a bloom bulb is created for this purpose. Photodynamic therapy can also be used and it is the use of ultraviolet light to control the condition.

Lastly, acne scars from acne can be removed by using laser surgery and it is effective for people with cystic condition, boils can be drained this way and using egg oil because it contains antioxidants, tree oil of tea and Aloe vera.
