The gaming phenomenon has been around for a long time. Previously dominated by game consoles, the main companies in the game console business were Microsoft and Sony. Each company designed and presented its own game console. If you recall, Microsoft’s product was the Xbox and Sony’s was the ever-popular and ever-changing Play Station, or as it’s basically called PSP (portable play station) because many of their designs are smaller and more portable these days.

It really is an excellent concept because it satisfies the consumer to be able to transport their consoles and games wherever they want to have a gaming session. The product has many versions and each version continues to work well, as well as being hard for die-hard gamers to give up when something newly redesigned comes along. They get very attached to their PSPs.

The latest gaming device is the PSP Go. The design has everyone talking, from gaming enthusiasts to those who consider themselves gaming newbies. The new unit was released on October 1 in the US and Europe and will be released in Japan on November 1, 2009. It is a device that has been highly anticipated around the world. Many people are waiting to buy it or are trying to convince themselves that it would be a great addition to their gaming systems. The expectation for this product is huge because it has been redesigned to be as small as an I-Pod touch! Most gamers, of course, are just curious what upgrades Sony has made to the product, how much it will cost them, and of course, most importantly, they will still be able to play their UMD (Universal Multimedia Device) games.

The features presented to consumers are the first of their kind. The PSP Go sports a beautiful premium exterior finish that commands attention. The buttons are not plastic, but heavy duty chrome. The screen size, although smaller, has the same beautiful colors as its predecessors, but without the interlacing problem that the PSP 3 had. Also, instead of the UMD drive for the disks, it has been replaced with 64mb of memory and 16 additional. mb of internal flash memory to store games and movies. It has a very nice sliding door at the top so you can access the controls. Plus, once you’re done, you can easily slip it into your pocket and you’re good to go. No messy cables, drives to keep up with, or cumbersome carrying case to worry about.

Sound-wise, the unit has built-in speakers so you can still enjoy sound effects from your games and it also comes with a microphone, Wi-Fi with integrated web browser, and Bluetooth connectivity. It has USB connectivity, but the mini USB plugs are gone. Sony has a proprietary USB cable that only fits the PSP Go.

Since the unit has Bluetooth connectivity, it lacks infrared connectivity, but Bluetooth is much more convenient than infrared because you can use it with other devices as well. Although some features are missing, you can’t have everything. The benefits of the device exceed the expectations of gaming enthusiasts, especially for those of us who have not experienced previous PSP models. Previous models were huge successes and the PSP Go is expected to increase in sales over the holidays, plenty of time for the serious gamer to decide it would make a great addition to their portable devices.
