The most common problem people have when creating a cover letter is what to say or how to write it. Your letter should be short and sweet. You have to be direct and to the point. Limit the number of paragraphs to 3 or 4. You don’t need to list all of your skills, that’s the job of your resume.

The first paragraph should grab the hiring manager’s attention and get them interested in reading more about you. Also, make sure your reader knows what job you’re applying for within this first paragraph. What you want is a concise, well-focused letter that contains relevant facts about you and how you will benefit the company.

As you write your letter, make the second paragraphs about the skills and benefits you can bring to the company. Why and how you are better than the competition. What the company really wants to know is how effective you will be for this position. This is your chance to sell yourself to the hiring manager.

Your resume is full of facts and dates, so make your cover letter more personal. Try to avoid including in your letter dates and facts that are already on your resume. He’s writing this letter to show interest in you so that the hiring manager or human resources department will read your entire resume and not just scan it.

The final paragraph should be short and to the point. The point is “ask for an interview.” You’d be surprised how many people send a cover letter and resume to an employer and never apply for the interview. They simply assume that the employer will call. Be sure to make a call to action by requesting an interview with the employer.
