Newborn babies are naturally entertained by the world around them and will happily lie down and stare at a crib mobile, stuffed toy, or other object for quite some time. However, when they are about three months old, babies will start trying to move and explore, and this is a good time to introduce activity toys that give them a sense of freedom before they can walk.

There are many different activity toys available for babies of different ages, the most popular being activity centers and mats, hammocks, rocking chairs, and swings and walkers. You should always check that the toy is suitable for your child’s developmental age. Activity toys generally come with recommended age ranges, but you should also pay attention to requirements such as your baby being able to hold his or her head without assistance.

For young babies, activity mats are great. Babies will happily lie on these and play with the textures and toys on the mat. They are also good for “tummy time,” which helps strengthen your baby’s neck so that he can support his head on his own. Doilies come in different styles, from plain cloth rugs to fancy styles with toys hanging above them.

Bouncy chairs are also good for babies from birth and they find movement very relaxing. Baby swings are similar but tend to be more expensive and run on batteries. Some chairs have an additional vibration feature which can be good if your baby is not going to sleep.

Starting at three or four months, you can start using a door hammock, which is great fun for babies and helps them develop leg muscles in preparation for walking. These hammocks are inexpensive and can be used on any door of the right width.
