I used to wonder how locksmiths were gainfully employed!

I used to assume that the only time you would ever need a locksmith would be if you were the unlucky victim of a break-in. If the forced entry damage was severe enough that you couldn’t fix it on your own, I figured that was the only time I would need a professional with this area of expertise.

Most of us are able to head down to our local big box store, you know the ones with the big orange or blue signs, and pick up a set of locks and install them ourselves. So I used to wonder how these professional locksmith companies survived.

Then it happened.

I was ready to go out with my daughter and I turned the bottom knob on the door under the deadbolt and all I heard was a click. It did not open. She turned it in the opposite direction and it was as smooth as silk, the only problem was that it wasn’t opening the door!

I didn’t panic, it wasn’t a big deal after all. I was going to remove the doorknob and take out the faulty part and go to the place with the orange sign and buy a new one, install it myself and my problem would be solved or so I thought.

There was only one problem, to remove the faulty part I had to open the door to get it out. That turned out to be impossible! To make matters worse, I called the local orange sign shop and spoke to an “associate” on the phone, they didn’t have the part, I would have to replace the entire assembly.

I reluctantly fired up my search engine and started looking for someone to help me. Low and lo and behold I got all sorts of results. I couldn’t tell one of these companies from the other, so I called a couple of friends, one of whom recommended a company I recognized from the search.

They were there in no time and opened the door in seconds. It was like magic! Get this, the part I needed was on the truck the service person arrived in, I guess in your line of work this part is commonly defective. Within twenty minutes of the service technician’s arrival, my part was installed and my door was working again!

Now I understand exactly why these guys are around here!

I had some reservations about hiring one of these companies, the locksmith industry has a bit of a bad reputation in the industry. No locksmith apprentice ship or license needed; There is no official association that I am aware of that governs this trade or skill.

I’ll tell you one thing though, these guys know what they’re doing, and they’re not just one-trick ponies either.

As I chatted and chatted a bit, the service person informed me that his company installs all kinds of security-related equipment, not just locks.

An exceptional locksmith company will provide CCTV surveillance systems in addition to high-tech locking systems like card locks or retinal rectification systems.

These guys are also auto lock experts so if your auto lock system is not working properly you should consider your local locksmith before heading to the local car dealer. I guarantee you will save a lot of money on labor costs! They will come to you too, you can’t beat that.
