Good news, DIYers! Hanging roman blinds is a simple task that can be accomplished with simple instructions.

To get started, equip yourself with tools, including your trusty tape measure, a pair of safety glasses, a pencil, screwdrivers (Philips and/or flat head), a level, a pair of scissors, and a drill with 1/16″ and 7/64″ bits. Verify that the shade kit includes the following: mounting brackets, mounting screws, and any additional mounting brackets you may need for support.

Remember that different mounting techniques apply to different mounting surfaces. The screws that are inside the kit to hang the blinds should only be used if your surface is made of wood. If you are working on drywall or plastic, drill holes for anchors used in hollow walls. If you have metal surfaces, drill holes and then use metal screws that are short. If you are working on surfaces similar to concrete, brick or stone, drill holes with a carbide drill and use the correct plugs or anchors with the screws.

The three common types of Roman blind installation are: 1) inside mount, 2) outside mount, and 3) ceiling mount. Inside mounted blinds are designed to be installed inside the window frame. To begin hanging, keep the top rail level with the top of the cabinet.

The next step is to lower the blind so you know if you are the exact height. After checking, hold the rail level with the casing, then drill holes in the casing with the 1/16″ bits. This should be through the holes (not the slots) in the main rail. If you need to level the rail, do so with a shim. To attach the shade to the wood casing, use 2″ size wood screws.

The ceiling mounted type of installation allows the blind to overlap the window opening. With this type, the brackets for installation are attached to the ceiling. To do this, the head rail must be clamped against the ceiling. Next, lower the blind to see if it is the proper length. This is also to make sure the blind clears any obstacles. While holding the top rail, mark the slot points for the top rail. The next step is to attach the mounting bracket next to the ceiling. Then mark it for 2 screw holes to be placed diagonally. Align the brackets with the midpoints of each slot on the top rail. After aligning, drill holes and make sure to use the correct wall anchors to hang the brackets. When drilling the holes, the top rail should be pushed onto the brackets so that the bracket posts fit through the top rail slots. To secure the head rail to the brackets, use nuts.

For exterior mounting of roman blinds, please note that the roman blind is designed to fit through the window opening. With this type of suspension, the brackets for installation must be mounted on the window frame or mounted on the wall. After leveling the top rail, lower the shade to make sure the shade length is correct and there are no obstructions. Hold the top rail in position, either on the window frame or on the wall. Use a pencil to mark the points of the grooves. When you’re done marking the dots, hold the brackets in place so you can mark the screw locations on the bracket. The brackets must be aligned with the midpoints of the slots in the top rail. The next step is to drill holes and place wall anchors in the holes you just drilled. Position the top rail on the brackets so that the threaded posts fit through the slots in the top rail. Lastly, secure the head rail to the brackets with wing nuts.

Congratulations! He has successfully completed the installation of roman blinds.
