Weymouth Beach Etiquette – Ways for you and others to enjoy the beach

The Weymouth area is a hot spot for many people, especially families looking to enjoy Dorset’s idyllic beaches. The area has an abundance of things to see and do for people of any age. To ensure that everyone enjoys the beaches, it is good that everyone follows a good standard of beach etiquette. This doesn’t mean you can have less fun, it’s just a way to make sure everyone enjoys the beaches to the fullest while just keeping a few things in mind.

A common sight on a summer night on many UK beaches is tourists having a barbecue. There is nothing better than enjoying a barbecue with your family or friends while sunbathing. Barbecues are discouraged on Weymouth’s beaches, but if you decide to have one there are a few considerations worth keeping in mind:

Try to have your barbecue in an area that is less likely to cause problems for other users. A good example is trying to stay away from any entrance to the beach.

Once your barbecue is done, be sure to take it home and dispose of it safely. Never put it in one of the containers because it could cause a fire. You are also asked not to bury your used barbecue. Burying a barbecue in the sand actually makes the barbecue and its embers retain heat longer, if stepped on by a person or dog it could cause serious injury.

Always be mindful of other beach users. If everyone gives each other a little consideration, the beach experience is more enjoyable for everyone.

Take your garbage home, if everyone puts their grain of sand, it helps keep the beaches attractive. What would you think if you showed up and the beach was full of garbage?

While Weymouth’s main beach does not allow dogs, some in the area do, such as Preston Beach. Your dog should be kept on a leash unless he is very well behaved and well trained. While you know your dog is friendly, others may not be, or may even be afraid of dogs. If your dog makes a mess on the beach, please clean it up and dispose of it in one of the assigned bins to keep the beaches hygienic for everyone.

While these things seem pretty obvious and simple to do, many people forget about them. It is not with malice or bad intentions, but simply by not stopping and thinking about its effect on others who are also trying to enjoy their vacation. The most important thing for everyone is to have fun!
