Every home or business owner who owns property needs HOI, homeowners insurance, or hazard insurance. It just depends on where you are in the country or who you are dealing with as to what terminology is used. But it’s all the same.

You can’t buy a home, whether it’s a single-family home, townhome, condominium, or even an office building, without getting hazard insurance before you settle. Hazard insurance gives you, the property owner and the lender, the peace of mind that in the event of a fire or some other catastrophe, this asset will be recovered and everyone will be protected from financial ruin.

Now, depending on the size of your home or mortgage, risk insurance can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars per year. As I’m sure you know, insurance goes up almost every year and forget about it if you’ve made a claim. In some cases, hazard insurance can be as expensive, if not more, than your annual property tax bill.

Wait, I know you thought Christmas was over, but here’s a belated Christmas present for you. There’s a way to save 12-15% a year on your HOI/hazards insurance that 90% of home and business owners don’t even know about. Your insurance agent probably doesn’t know or think to ask.

I know you’re wondering, “How can I possibly save 12-15% on my annual hazard insurance bill?”

The answer is through security systems. Security is not a wish nowadays, it is a necessity. Insurance companies give discounts to their customers for having security devices on their properties. These security systems can be as simple as monitored systems to an easy to install security and surveillance camera system.

This is the question you want to ask your insurance agent when applying for a new homeowners or hazard insurance policy or renewing your current policy. Either you pick up the phone and call your insurance agent or go to their office. Ask them “Hello Mr. or Mrs. Agent, how much discount will I get for having security devices or systems on my property?” You may be pleasantly surprised when you hear the answer.

Also, one more thing for those of you who have had security devices, such as motion detectors, security or surveillance cameras, and/or monitored devices. If you have receipts or invoices from your hidden cameras, surveillance or monitoring camera systems; your insurance company must prorate your bill for that time period once you request it. So get on the phone and save some money. This is for your safety and saving money.
