Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral found in a variety of foods. In the body, the highest levels of molybdenum are said to be found in the liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, bones, skin, and enamel of human teeth. It is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and excreted through the urine. It can also play a role in the normal sexual function of men. It is suggested that impotence in older men is related to a molybdenum deficiency. It is also said to have some value in protecting against disorders of the mouth and gums. Molybdenum functions as an essential cofactor of three important enzyme systems:

  • Sulfite oxidase It is an enzyme that helps break down sulfites (sulfur amino acids). This is important for normal cell function and nitrogen synthesis.
  • Xanthine oxidase it is an enzyme that helps make uric acid in the body. Uric acid is a final product resulting from protein synthesis (purine). Most of the uric acid passes through the urine. Uric acid production is normal and supports urogenital health. Uric acid acts as an antioxidant in our blood. It is useful for fighting free radical activity in the lining of our blood vessels. Purines are found in liver, anchovies, mackerel, dried beans and peas, beer, and wine.
  • Xanthine oxidase can also help regulate the body’s use of iron. It is believed to aid in the transfer of iron from its storage in the liver to other parts of the body. In this role, it can help prevent anemia.
  • Aldehyde oxidase helps to oxidize carbohydrates and certain aldehydes,
