The economic conditions facing the world right now have caused many people to consider alternative solutions to many of their financial problems. In a typical home, electricity is probably the single commodity that takes up the largest share of the family budget. This is the reason why many homeowners are considering alternative energy sources that allow them to live off the grid. Our conventional energy resources, such as fossil fuels, are simply not sustainable enough, considering the world’s increasingly insatiable need for electricity. Looking for alternative energy sources has become more important than ever. Fortunately, wind and solar power have provided a workable solution to the energy crisis facing the entire world population right now.

By using the sun’s energy effectively, we can provide enough highly sustainable energy to our homes. Efficiency is essentially the key that will allow us to live completely off the grid. Since the sun’s energy is virtually unlimited and also free, it can provide renewable energy to the entire world as long as the sun continues to shine. The only hurdle one has to face when it comes to solar power, or wind power for that matter, is finding the ability to harness that energy and convert it into usable electricity. Now we have that technology. Through solar panels and wind turbines or wind generators, we can harness the power of the sun and the power of the wind, respectively, as well. Unfortunately, though, the initial cost of installing solar panels or wind turbines can be quite high, especially if you plan to live completely off the grid.

Living off the local power grid is absolutely possible, although it can be expensive at first. Using solar energy to power a home will require installing solar panels on the roof of your home or on land where there is maximum sun exposure. Depending on your home’s energy needs, the cost can range from moderately inexpensive to very expensive. If you plan on using solar to heat your water or power just a few of the appliances in your house, then the initial cost may not be that high. However, if you want to be completely independent from your local power grid, it can cost a lot more, because to power an entire house you will need more solar cells, and solar cells, which are what solar panels are made of, can be quite expensive.

If you plan to use solar power as your primary power source, you may want to consider not only your home’s energy use, but your geographic location as well. Areas located near the equator have the most sun exposure, compared to areas north or south near the two poles. This is crucial as the effectiveness of solar panels in harnessing the sun’s energy will depend on how much exposure they receive from the sun. The bottom line is that while the initial cost of switching to solar power can be quite high, especially if you want to live off the grid, the benefits you will receive in the near future far outweigh your initial expenses.
