Built-in wardrobes, whether sliding or hinged, are built from floor to ceiling and, where appropriate, can be wall-to-wall in most cases. Additionally, both types of cabinets are typically built without backs or sides to maximize available storage space. However, some customers prefer to have backs and sides to their cabinets, which of course will have an impact on storage space.

Both sliding door wardrobes and swing door wardrobes are made to measure, so they adapt to almost any space. With both wardrobe options, you can choose from a number of interior storage options to customize including; long and short hangers, tie racks, shoe racks, pants hangers, drawers, shelves and more, so this is not different in each case, however, to help you choose:

Hinged Door Wardrobes

  • The depth of cabinets with hinges is usually up to 100mm less, since there is no sliding guide.
  • Hinged wardrobe doors swing open, so although the overall depth of the wardrobe is less than a standard sliding wardrobe, the space required is usually greater to account for the ‘swing’ clearance of the door.
  • Hinged doors usually have a maximum size of around 600mm (about 2ft), so as not to put too much weight on the hinges when opening.
  • Hinged cabinets typically have a built-in floor at the height of a standard plinth of around 100mm, which will marginally reduce hanging space. However, when the ceiling height is around 2300-2400mm, this is normally not a problem. Furthermore, if necessary, the height of the floor can be modified to suit the customer’s requirements, subject to the height of the ceiling.
  • With genuine custom-made furniture, there are no standard door sizes, so outside of the maximum size above and a practical reason not to have doors that are too small, hinged doors can be made to any size.

Sliding door wardrobes

  • Unlike hinged cabinets, sliding doors do not require space to open into the room.
  • The standard depth of cabinets with sliding doors is around 650 mm (approx. 26 inches), which allows for the track track for sliding doors. This depth also allows enough space so that clothes do not get caught in the doors as they are opened or closed. However, if space is limited, you can always hang your clothes “upside down” inside the closet, which isn’t as practical, but it does solve a space issue and will reduce the closet depth needed.
  • With sliding robes, you have the option of going for larger doors and much larger mirrors. Sliding doors can be made up to 1200 wide, with a choice of mirrored, panel, sculpted, frosted, or colored glass. However, if cost is not an issue, slightly larger doors can also be made.
  • There are no standard door sizes – our door sizes are fully adjustable and made to fit your space.
  • There are no floors in sliding door wardrobes, so you get maximum storage possibilities.
