So, your boy or girl is having a birthday and you are planning a birthday party. Well, along with the games, here’s something to make the party a little more fun when it comes to cake time. I personally love the whole tradition of the birthday cake and blowing out the candles after making a wish, and it’s a tradition I wouldn’t do away with myself. However, there are some ways to make it an even more entertaining activity for the children who have come to the party.

First the anticipation, seeing the candles lit, singing happy birthday, then making the wish and finally blowing out the candles on the birthday cake is always exciting. Then, traditionally, that would be followed by cutting and serving the cake, along with the ice cream, to each child. However, if you choose to set up a cupcake station, it becomes a fun activity for all the children, who eat the cupcakes that they themselves have frosted and decorated to their liking.

This works great for themed and non-themed birthday parties alike. There are any number of options. For example, if your little girl wants a princess theme for her party, the main cake can be made smaller and still have princess decorations; a castle, tiara, jewelry, etc. I was always careful to serve the cake without any of the toy decorations on the slices to prevent kids from getting upset if they didn’t get a slice with a toy on it. Having a cupcake station eliminates that problem.

There may be children at the party who prefer white frosting over chocolate, or chocolate cake over white cake, and vice versa. This is something you can find out quite easily by asking the parents ahead of time, then, if necessary, you can have each one available, and just like that, the problem is solved.

For the cupcake station:

  1. It’s best to install it in an area where spilled icing or other decorations on the floor won’t be a big problem, and are easily cleaned up if they do.
  2. Make sure the table is easy for children to reach.
  3. Set the desired number of cupcakes.
  4. Stack the party plates.
  5. Provide child-safe utensils for applying the frosting.
  6. It is best to have the frosting bowls placed where more than one child at a time can reach them.
  7. Arrange bowls or maracas with cupcake decorations.
  8. Have a tray with edible or toy toppers to finish off your creation.
  9. It will be helpful if there are a couple of people to help supervise and help with decorating.
  10. You might decide to do this just before it’s time to bring out the cake and sing happy birthday so everyone can help themselves to ice cream afterwards and enjoy.

Choosing themed decorations for your cupcakes is quite easy. If it’s a princess theme, for example, edible star sprinkles, edible glitter, even edible diamond sugar sprinkles are now available, and they look real. If there isn’t a craft supply store near you, or they don’t have what you have in mind, they can be ordered online.
