Children’s birthday cakes are both a joy and a challenge to create. It’s always gratifying to see that smile on your child’s face when he sees your cake for the first time. Don’t steal that experience! Here are some tips to help make the cake making experience easier and more enjoyable.

Pastels take the lead from the theme

As with everything else, the cake should follow the theme of the party. Girls and boys like different themes, and there are hundreds to choose from. But make sure your little one picks just one theme early, so they have more time to come up with cake ideas!

Would a dinosaur-shaped cake suit your toddler’s dinosaur theme? Would your little princess like a cake in the shape of an imposing castle? Or would the little one love a tray full of “Angry Birds” cupcakes? These are just a few kids birthday cake ideas that you can use!

Types of cakes to choose from

The most common types of cakes are rectangular, with the design handled by the skillful placement of colored icing, candy flowers, and other decorative pieces. Some of these cakes have different shapes, but the design is always on the top side.

Other children’s birthday cakes are three-dimensional. For example, if your child wants to be a firefighter, he could make a cake in the exact shape of a fire truck: on four wheels, with firefighter figurines and a Dalmatian puppy, and with candles placed on top of a “burning building.”

Why not cupcakes?

Yes, why not? Having your little one’s birthday cake served as delicious and colorful cupcakes has certain advantages. One, it’s totally unexpected… Two, it means fewer dishes to wash up after the party… and Three, it’s easier to make sure everyone at the party gets at least one cupcake.

(Plus, the cupcake towers are cute—they make a great party centerpiece!)

where to get ideas

The first place to get ideas for children’s birthday cakes are the confectioners in your city. Some of them have been in the business for years, so they know which designs are popular and which are nothing but trouble.

Another place to get ideas would be TV shows like Cake Boss, Ace Of Cakes (or its reruns, at least, it’s still a pretty good show), and DC Cupcakes. You can get ideas from their programs and then approach your local pastry chef and see if they can pull it off.

One last question: Should you try to bake the cake yourself? Well, if you’re confident in your abilities and if your kiddo likes your cakes and pies, then go ahead, just keep it a surprise and have the camera ready when you roll out the cake on your little one’s big day. !
