Every DSLR/camera owner who chooses photography as a career has to make this decision one day or another.

Here I am sharing my personal experience as a professional candid wedding photographer for over 2 years, this article applies to all photography verticals like ‘Wildlife or Fashion Photography’ or any other.

• You have to start experimenting- You can’t get amazing images by applying an old set of rules in photography and posing. Get out of your comfort zone and explore different ideas and challenge traditions.

• Find your niche- Not everyone can do everything, find your sector in Photography, find what makes you feel happy and you will be able to put food on your plate.

• Learn to say no- This is one of the main problems I personally faced, people expect you to shoot them for free! The answer is NO, that is what makes you a professional.

• Start planning-Planning is a very important part of photography, a good photographer is always ready for any moment in a live session. If things can be planned in advance, it is highly recommended to observe and think about what can be done and how it can be done. Not all clients want you to experiment with him/her.

• Love your job- Love your job stop listening to the crowd Period especially in India where no profession is respected except Civil Services, Government. Professionals, Business Magnates and Ministers of course. Don’t let those things bother you. Believe me that no other profession is respected here at least by the elderly and the bureaucrats. You may be the CEO/President of your company, but still a job at MNC is considered the best.

• Invest money in gear and time in skills- Yes, money should be invested in high-end equipment, because after reaching a level, high-quality equipment is required to cross the amateur hurdle and get a professional appearance in your work. Invest time in learning new skills and practice a lot. YouTube is the master for getting new ideas and experimenting.

• Keep your rates competitive- Your work defines you, but do not demand yourself too high or too low, ultimately it is the money, that food and the comforts that satisfy our daily appetite

• Promote your business well. Market your photos well, be copyrighted, and avoid frequent Facebook promotions. Invest more in building a quality and lightweight website. Try to stay updated on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc. This helps maintain brand awareness.

• Last and most important- Create your own unique style of photography aka your own signature style, market yourself uniquely, and don’t try to malign other photographers. AND

LET YOUR PHOTOS SPEAK
