Valentine’s Day is coming up. Sweet lovers celebrate this special day for their love, and they often prepare gifts for each other. We all know that this day is a day to show your love to your loved one, but do you know why this romantic day is on February 14 and why it is a day for lovers?

You may have heard the name Valentine, and from the name we know that he was the founder of Valentine’s Day. But who is Valentine? Why is his name associated with love and romance in February? In fact, the origin of Valentine’s Day can actually be dated back 1500 years, as far back as AD 270. That’s a long time ago, and we’re not sure if the origin is real. There are many versions in the world, and I only write one of them. However, if you are interested in the history of this romantic day, this legend can help you.

Saint Valentine was a bishop who lived around AD 270 in Rome. At that time, the Roman Emperor Claudius “…had prohibited marriage for young soldiers, and whoever violated this rule would be executed”. This ban was ridiculous but no one can object. The bishop knew who was getting married but he held these secret marriage ceremonies for the soldiers. Unfortunately, the emperor overheard this and had Valentine arrested.

While Valentine was in prison, he restored sight to his jailer’s blind daughter because of her strong faith. The emperor heard this and wanted the bishop to be the God of Roman but he refused so the emperor killed him. Before his execution, Valentine wrote a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter and signed “From your Valentine.” This sentence was later spread and this note is believed to be the beginning of the sending of Valentine’s cards. It is said that Valentin fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. In AD 496, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor Valentine’s Day, and on this date, sweet lovers exchanged messages of love and Mr. Valentine became the “Patron of Lovers”.

The English writer Chaucer was the first person to connect Valentine’s Day with romance, writing “Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine.” In medieval England and France, people believed that birds mate on this special day, and Chaucer wrote:

“Because this was on Valentine’s Day, when each bird comes there to choose its mate.
