Whether you buy new or used, a portable loading ramp can be a useful tool to keep cargo moving in and out of your warehouse doors. Follow these eight tips to use your loading ramp safely:

Low angle The smaller the angle, the easier and safer it is to move the forklift up and down the ramp. Many ramps have a maximum height for use. Make sure you and your employees are aware of this range and always keep the ramp below this height.

Use chains and clamps – Ramp clamps and safety chains can and should be used to secure the ramp to the trailer or other dock area. Typically these safety features will come with a new and used standard forklift ramp. Be sure to adjust the safety chains and ramp clamps as necessary to secure the load.

Take it easy- When maneuvering up and down the ramp, a slow and steady approach is always best. Try not to jerk up the forklift or maneuver too fast, putting the operator’s safety at risk.

Know the numbers – Always know the maximum weight capacity of your ramp. When purchasing a used vehicle, be sure to ask the dealer or previous owner what the weight capacity of the used loading ramp you are considering was.

Forklift knowledge and experience – Being able to safely operate a standard forklift is one of the main components of the safe use of a forklift ramp. Make sure employees who will work on the ramp are certified to operate a forklift. General knowledge and experience with forklifts will also help the operator move the load efficiently in and out of the warehouse, keeping the process on track.

Provide training – Knowledge is key when it comes to a new and used loading ramp. Developing and implementing a robust training program will give your employees the confidence to operate the ramp properly.

Inspect it – Intentional ramp inspections on a regular basis will not only extend the life of the ramp, but will also keep your product safe. Be sure to check for signs of rust, clamps, or broken chains and remove all debris from the cargo bed. Ideally, all employees using the ramp will be instructed on how and when to visually inspect its components prior to use. Inspections are also critical when purchasing a used loading ramp. Be sure to check the unit for wear and tear, as well as its overall construction.

Point it out- Maintain signs near the ramp regarding proper use, safe forklift operator practices, and full weight capacity and maximum load limits. This signage should be easy to read and accessible to the employees for whom it was created to report.

Follow these loading ramp safety tips closely and often to keep the process moving efficiently in your warehouse. Train your employees with knowledge of proper procedures along with practice in the field to make sure they feel comfortable securing and using each and every ramp you employ. As always, a common sense approach to loading ramps will provide a safe and healthy environment.
