Do you ever feel overwhelmed when you walk into a furniture store or are browsing the website of an online furniture store? Don’t worry, you are not alone. With all the different colors, styles, fabrics, brand names, prices, and materials, it can feel like you just received a ton of bricks.

But maybe choosing furniture is not as difficult as we think. There are 3 easy steps to follow to know in advance what to look for. That way, when you’re browsing the web or visiting your local furniture store, you’ll know exactly what you want and won’t end up wandering around for hours trying to decide.

The steps are the following:
1. Choose a style.
2. Choose the colors.
3. Choose the tone of wood you want.

These steps seem pretty simple, right? However, online you will find (what it feels like) too many different styles to choose from. But I’ll simplify it here for now. Basically, many of the styles can be classified into four categories: modern, contemporary, rustic, and chic. And what are you looking for? Do you need to add that contemporary touch to your home or maybe that rustic feel? First, we need to understand what these different styles really mean.

The Modern Style is what we would consider from the 19th century to the present day. It is produced by the style of art, modernism. The furniture is more practical and is not intended to be excessive. Especially after World War II, when not many people had excess of anything. It is usually compact and multifunctional, which makes it perfect for apartments and smaller houses.

The Contemporary Style ranges from the end of the 20th century to the present. It has the sharpest, crispest, cleanest lines. The style is constantly changing with the times and styles that people like today. It is characterized by more design-oriented furniture than practicality.

Country style is what most people would consider farmhouse or cabin furniture. It is a lot of decorations and furniture made of wood and wrought iron. It also has many muted colors: grays, reds, and browns. It is perfect if you like the country atmosphere.

Chic style is brighter pastel colors with floral designs. It is also very popular in today’s world. Many people like the weathered look found on fancy furniture.

Once you decide on a style, you move on to the colors you want in your home. Colors play with emotions. Brighter colors indicate more urgency and fun, while muted tones are more welcoming and relaxing. The specific color can also influence your feelings. Some additional research may help with that!

Lastly, you need to know what shade of wood you want in your furniture. There are three basic shades: light, medium and dark. They all complement each style well, so this is just a personal choice. Whether you like the natural look or a darkened mahogany look.

After you have decided on these three things, you can easily walk into any furniture store and find what you want because you know how you want it to look and if it will go with all your other furniture. Have fun and enjoy your next furniture shopping spree with these 3 tips.
