CAT – MBA Admission Test – Overview

CAT is the gateway to the cream of the Indian management institutes, the IIMs. CAT, or the Common Admission Test, is an aptitude test; It is the most popular test among future management students because it is accepted by the best institutes. The CAT is one of the most demanding entrance exams in the world for any graduate institute.

The number of questions asked in the common admission test varies each year and one CAT question paper you can have between 75 and 150 questions. The Common Admission Test assesses the candidate’s presence of mind and their ability to perform under pressure. The announcement of the procedure to appear in the Common Admission Test is made in the main newspapers in August of each year for admission to the program from the second half of June of the following year. CAT generally assesses three of your skills: – Problem solving – Data interpretation and logical reasoning – Verbal ability and reading comprehension. The CAT exam requires proficiency in all sections of the job. So the number of sections in the test doesn’t really matter; what matters is whether you are competitive and have answered questions in all sections.

All questions are multiple choice with four or five alternative answer options and the candidate must choose the best answer for each of the questions and mark it on a special Optical Reader answer sheet. Differential marks are assigned to the questions. The test included 150 to 200 objective type questions and is generally divided into three or four sections. The number of questions on the test has been steadily declining, from nearly 200 in the 1990s to 90 in 2005 and just 75 in 2006.

Very little strategy could be applied to select the easiest questions. Cut that down and don’t waste time on questions that are long. One misconception is that you should read the entire question document, at all. If you can answer 38 to 40 percent of the questions, CORRECTLY, you are done.

Not an engineer, no problem You don’t need to be an engineer to enter an IIM. In fact, not being an engineer can help in the interview part. IIM encourages diversity. And since you are not an engineer, you may be compared to other non-engineers. More than with engineers who can compare with those of IIIT.

Personal trainings or postcards are helpful for CAT preparation. The Coaching Institutes will teach you shortcuts and you will have the opportunity to appear in the Mock Tests conducted for CAT. It depends entirely on the faculty. Before joining any coaching class, first check with students who have already joined that particular institute.
